Earth System Research for Global Sustainability: A new 10-Year Research Initiative

Call for nominations into the interim steering committee

In an extended Review Process ICSU and ISSC identified a great need for a single, new overarching structure, which would allow for more integration of existing global environmental change programmes and activities, and would bring together in a new Steering Committee researchers, funders, industry, and other stakeholder groupings.

Main Conclusions:
The scientific community must now deliver the knowledge, that will enable countries to meet needs for sustainable development, poverty alleviation and environmental protection in the face of global change.
Current global research programs are unable to adequately meet the future challenges and needs.

While deepening our understanding of the earth system and of human impacts, the scientific community must now
- deliver solutions to sustainability challenges at regional scales,
- significantly expand the involvement of social scientists and economist,
- actively involve stakeholders and decision-makers in the process of defining and carrying out research.

The ESSP Program (started 2004) will be stopped and will be replaced by this new research initiative.

The Swiss Academies were asked to nominate high level candidates from Research, Funders, Service Agencies and Users into the Interim Steering Committee.
