Intercomparison and Validation of Ocean-Atmosphere Flux Fields
WCRP/SCOR Workshop, WCRP Report No 115

The WCRP (World Climate Research Programme) and SCOR (Scientific Committee on Ocean Research) held a Workshop on «Intercomparison and Validation of Ocean-Atmosphere Flux Fields» at the Bolger Center, Potomac, MD, USA, 21-24 May 2001. One hundred and seven scientists form 16 countries attended the meeting. After initial keynote addresses, four sessions presented papers on and discussed flux products from modeling and data assimilation, validation of flux products, flux fields from remote sensing and flux measurements and parameterization. On the final day, three breakout groups addressed the following questions:
A) How can we define the best parameterizations and obtain the highest quality measurements necessary to estimate air-sea fluxes?
B) How can we validate flux estimates, considering that the truth about air-sea fluxes is not known?
C) How can we improve flux products in the future?
The WCRP report No 115 contains the reports of the three breakout groups (Parameterisations & Measurement, Verification, Flux Field Improvement in the Future) and extended abstracts for the papers presented at the meeting. Versions of these documents are also available at the WGASF web site (Working Group on Air Sea Fluxes).
The WCRP Report No 115 can be ordered at the Secretariat of the World Meteorological Organization, Case Postale No. 2300, 1211 Geneva 2, Switzerland
