Heinz Wanner, director of the NCCR Climate and professor of geography and climatology at the University of Bern, has been awarded the Prix Vautrin Lud. This prize is the most prestigious award for geographers throughout the world. The jury has honored Heinz Wanner for his lifelong contributions as a researcher, teacher and promoter of international projects. The award will be presented on 28th September 2006 during the Festival International de Géographie in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, France. This public event is regularly attended by tens of thousands of visitors. The Prix Vautrin Lud, which is viewed by many geographers as the unofficial Nobel Prize in their discipline, has been awarded 16 times in the past. It has been given to scientists from different continents that work in all fields of geography. Vautrin Lud was a French scholar who was instrumental in naming America for the Florentine navigator Amergio Vespucci.
Heinz Wanner chaired ProClim- from 1996 to 2000, was the first chair of the OcCC and is currently director and member of the steering committee of the international program PAGES.
