Global Change in the Hydrological CycleThe German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched «Research for the Environment», a strategy to support a policy for worldwide sustainable development. The first of four programs is called Global Change in the Hydrological Cycle (GLOWA). The aim of GLOWA is to develop integrated strategies for sustainable and far-sighted management of water, lakes and rivers at the regional level, taking account of ecosystem contexts and the socio-economic framework. Four projects are planned within the GLOWA program on a transect form north to south: Elbe - Danube - North Africa - Lake Volta (West Africa). There are still several positions open for young researchers to make their PhD within the Volta project. The principal objective of the Volta project is the development of a scientifically sound decision support system for the assessment, sustainable use and development of water resources in the Volta Basin. An interdisciplinary team (from meteorology and hydrology, through pedology and agronomy, to economy and law) will work from the very beginning to ensure meaningful exchange of data and information.
