CLIVAR Initial Implementation PlanThe first implementation plan of the WCRP project Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) has recently been published. It is available on the CLIVAR web site (http://www.dkrz.de/clivar/vol2/contents_new.html). The plan is based on the CLIVAR Science Plan (WCRP 1995) and presents the current state of knowledge and planning. It is most detailed where programs are currently well defined and identifies the directions that its sub-programs are expected to take over the next 5-10 years. CLIVAR's scientific goals are directed towards description, analysis, modelling and prediction of climate variability with time scales ranging from seasonal to centennial periods. CLIVAR primarily focusses on the atmosphere and the oceans and their interactions, which indicates the complementary role the program plays with regard to other parts of WCRP such as GEWEX and the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP). < back
