Marine Ecosystems and Global Change

IGBP Science No. 5

The science reports of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme IGBP are easy to understand and present the most recent new scientific understanding in major areas of Earth System Science arising from IGBP's work. The Science report No. 5 is dedicated to Marine Ecosystems and Gobal Change. It gives topical examples of the scientific problems that GLOBEC (Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics Project) is tackling and some selected scientific achievements.

full report: Marine Ecosystems and Global Change

Topics like changing marine ecosytem dynamics for example changes in trophic links, changes in biodiversity or in transport processes are visually rich presented as well as the global processes impacting the oceans. One of the major challenge for the GLOBEC project is the understanding of the interactions of plankton and how they will be affected by changes in ocean physics, mixing, currents and circulation resulting from global change.
