Well over 70 persons used the opportunity to get an early view into the content of the 3rd call for proposals for the topics «Global Change and Ecosystems» (6th EU Framework Program, Priority 6) on May 19, 2004 in Berne. In a very instructive and well structured talk, spiced with humorous comments, Giorgio Travaglini from Euresearch was able to keep the attention of the audience despite the complexity of the subject. Astrid Vasella from the BBW added insight into the processes leading to the topics included in the work program.
What were the killer criteria in the last call? Martin Beniston from the University of Fribourg shed some light on the work of the evaluators and into the process that lead to the selection of one out of ten proposals.
The presentations were rounded up by insights of two scientists with successful projects within previous EU research programs:
Wolfgang Nentwig from the Zoological Institute of the University of Bern focused on the efforts to have the topic included in the work program, the first contacts between the project partners up to the final approval of the project ALARM.
Markus Leuenberger, Climate and Environmental Physics of the University of Bern complemented this by advising on how to actively enhance the chances for success: Identify the uniqueness of one's expertise; communicate this through presentation at conferences and in invited talks; carefully select the projects (rejecting most) and finally carefully write and critically review the proposal.
The conference was organized by ProClim, ICAS, the Swiss Biodiversity Forum and Euresearch.
