Swiss polar research

Pioneering spirit, passion and excellence

This brochure outlines the areas in which Swiss science is most active within the polar science.

Swiss polar research traditionally focused on polar glaciology and climate. But it has greatly expanded: Swiss scientists also investigate in the biology and biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean or the coupling of climate, permafrost, and vegetation in tundra regions. They study atmospheric circulation, air pollution in polar regions, and the effect of snow on climate. They reconstruct past climates archived in ice, marine and lake sediments.
