This year's UN climate change conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ended last Saturday (18 December) after the United States, European Union and developing countries such as China and India finally reached a compromise on future strategies to fight global warming. Governments also agreed a package of measures to help countries adapt to climate change.
During the conference India - backed by China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia - had demanded assurances that they would not have to commit to reduce carbon emissions. But the European Union rejected India's call on the grounds that this could prejudice future talks.
The United States had been reluctant to discuss global warming strategies beyond 2012, but agreed to one meeting to be held over several days in Germany next May, on the theme of reducing harmful emissions and adapting to climate change.
